More Men Keen to Lose Weight

New research has revealed that it is not just women who are concerned with body image and diets.

Slimming World and YouGov discovered that 67 per cent of men are unhappy with their size and this may be linked to government statistics which show that there are currently over 19 million overweight or obese men in Britain.

The study found that there were a number of reasons why men might suffer from doubts about their physique as 25 per cent has received negative comments about their weight from a partner.

Men might also be keen to lose weight in order to keep a loved one because 19 per cent of women confessed that they think their relationship would be happier if their partner lost weight.

Health issues may also compel men to reduce their waistlines because the majority of males were aware of the link between weight and conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and stroke.

Combining a healthy diet with plenty of exercise is a great way to slim down and slimming supplements can also help the weight loss process, according to researchers at the University of Liverpool.

Scientists at the institution found that weight loss products, such as t5 slimming pills and t5 fat burners, are most effective in the long term if people take them at the same time as a balanced diet and healthy exercise regime.

The survey also found that 64 per cent of men said they needed to be more active in order to stay healthy and 74 per cent admitted that they are currently less active compared to their childhood.

Nutrition expert Dr Jacquie Lavin said that the football world cup is beneficial to men's health as they are inspired to emulate their idols and get fit.

She said: "With World Cup fever gripping the country there is a lot of interest in sport at the moment and getting active is great for health and weight. We're definitely in the middle of a shift in attitudes towards slimming and it's great that men are taking more interest in their weight and health."

Dr Lavin went onto say that men have the advantage of women in terms of losing weight as they are likely to slim down quicker.

"Men tend to have a higher muscle mass than women and so burn energy quicker, leading to a quicker weight loss," she added.

Men's Health Week 2010 is running from June 14th to the 20th and is this year's theme is 'Men and Physical Activity'.

Lose Weight Fast With The All Fruit Diet

Almost all fasting diets such as water and juice fasting requires individuals not to intake any food at all during fasting to ensure the success of the cleansing. However, this shuts down the digestive system in the process which forces the body into a decreased metabolism-state to save the source of energy. This is something a lot of people don't know because they don't properly research the diets. The fruit fasting diet is an excellent alternative diet for those trying to get rid of toxins out of their body and lose some weight while exploring for a reliable method of doing so. It is also a lot easier on your body and allows you to still get all the vital nutrients you need.

The fruit fasting diet plan is a 3-day diet plan that involves eating fruits within a couple of hours. It is a kind of detoxification wherein the toxins that result from chemicals from overly processed foods and synthetic ingredients are cleansed from your system as it is relieved off the stress of absorbing other foods. The high water and fiber content of the fruits are ideal for this work as your body grows into weight loss mode and helps you start shedding those unwanted pounds that you have been trying to lose.

With this diet, you can quickly shed 9-10 pounds within just 3 days. Another thing that makes fruit fasting diet program more advanced than other fasting diet plans is that it requires the ingestion of lean protein to spare the body's muscle and help burn off fat while the entire body is in detoxification. One of the best ways to burn fat fast is to build lean muscle. Building muscle needs an energy source to grow and your fat stores are what your body uses to do so. In the process the fat literally starts to melt away.

Basically the fruit fasting diet consists of a day of drinking only protein shakes accompanied by a couple of straight days of consuming fresh fruit every two hours with a dinner of raw veggies and lean protein or protein shake. This diet meets the requirement of what diet experts have said for years, that you should eat smaller meals throughout the day rather than 3 big meals that you gorge yourself. Milk products, caffeine, sodas, starch, tea, vegetables, juices, and sweets are not allowed to be consumed during this diet. During day one, you should drink a 6-ounce protein shake accompanied by 8-12 ounces of water every 2 hours, from 8 in the morning right up until 4 in the mid-day. In the second and 3rd day, the protein shake is replaced by a helping of new fruit with about 100 calories' worth with 8-12 ounces of water. As for the dinner through the three days, it is composed of three cups of uncooked veggie salad with half of lime or lemon, half flaxseed, and half avocado 3-6 ounces of lean protein or egg whites, or a protein drink should also be integrated.

Best Diet To Lose Weight Quickly That Is Very Effective For Anyone

Trying to find the best diet to lose weight quickly can be very difficult to do because there are so many people telling you different things that it can be hard to decide who to believe. That is why you need to know the truth about what diet to use that will help anyone lose weight quickly.

The key to losing weight fast is to learn how to eat right and what foods to eat. Below are a few critical things you need to know to help you get started on the right diet for losing weight.

1. You want to eat foods that will burn fat and will also help increase your metabolism. Losing weight quickly is not about starving yourself or counting calories; instead it is about eating right and eating more often.

2. Educate yourself on what the fat burning foods are. There are a lot more foods than you think that will increase your metabolism and help you burn fat, and and once you learn what these foods are, you will be losing the weight you want quickly.

Some of the different foods that are good for increasing metabolism and helping you burn fat include:

- Lean proteins

- Beans

- Fruits especially if they have pectin

- Peppers

- Onions

- Nuts and seeds

- Green tea

- Foods that are calcium rich

3. Eat more meals - You don't want to eat three big meals because this is definitely not the way to lose weight. Instead you want to eat 4 to 6 smaller meals every day because this will help your body keep burning fat.

Most people don't realize that it takes food in order to keep your metabolism going. By eating more meals that are smaller you will prevent your metabolism from stopping completely or from slowing down.

4. Exercise - This isn't a food but it is vital to losing weight along with eating the right foods and eating the right way. Exercising will help you burn fat if you do it on a regular basis. It is a good idea to exercise 3 times a week for at least 20 minutes each time because doing this with the right diet will help you shed pounds quickly.

Most people mistakenly believe that the right diet is all about the foods but that it not true. It is about keeping your body active with exercise and eating the right foods and the right amounts each day. The combination of these three things combined is the best diet to lose weight quickly.

Healthy Vegetarian Weight Loss - Tips to Help Overweight Vegetarians Lose Weight & Gain Health

Losing weight doesn't mean you'll have to sacrifice your health unless you use crash diets, pills, surgeries or other risky weight loss methods. In fact, you can lose fat and gain health at the same time. No special secrets to achieve that. Just do these 4 things right in your daily vegetarian lifestyle, and you'll lose your stubborn belly fat, trim down your cushioned buttock, and remove your thunder thighs naturally as a vegetarian. More importantly, you restore your health and extend your life.

Vegetarian Weight Loss Tip #1 - Eat to Lose Weight

Did you experience this most of the time - you don't really feel full while eating, but when you're done you feel stuffed? That's because it takes your stomach about 10 - 20 minutes to tell your brain whether it's full or not. So, when you eat fast, by the time your brain receives the "full" signal from your stomach, you've already eaten too much, thereby over-consuming calories.

Thus, slowing down your eating speed gives your stomach ample time to register satiety with your brain, so you won't heap on excess calories. I suggest that you take 20 - 30 minutes to savor your meal.

Next, instead of taking 3 big-portion meals a day, break them into 5 smaller meals - breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus 2 snacks slotting in between the main meals. Eating this way will keep your body metabolically active throughout the day in order to burn fat continuously.

Effective vegetarian weight loss begins with eating vegetarian diet the healthy way.

Vegetarian Weight Loss Tip #2 - Drink to Lose Weight

In cold weather, you don't sweat much, hence your body retains water easily. If you still drink 8 glasses of water (as parroted by most people), your body's water mass may shoot up to cause an imbalance in your sodium (and other electrolytes) level, resulting in water poisoning (hyponatremia) that triggers seizures, brain damage and even death.

Besides, your fiber intake and other liquid intakes (like soup, fruit juice, etc) also contribute to your body's hydration condition. More fiber intake will make you feel thirsty easily as fiber absorbs water for smooth excretion. So you may need to drink more water for that reason. On the other hand, you may not need to if you had already ingested lots of soup or juices for the day.

So, drink the amount of water your body actually needs for proper hydration and your metabolism will run properly to burn fat and help you lose weight.

Vegetarian Weight Loss Tip #3 - Exercise to Lose Weight

Want to take less time to burn more fat? Choose interval training over cardio.

Interval training is a short burst workout routine such that you raise your workout intensity by 10% and do it for a minute, then drop all the way down to recovery state for another minute, followed by another burst of exercise for a minute and so on.

And the best time to get better fat burning response is before your breakfast. But if you can't make it in the morning due to your shift work, other timings work as well, albeit will burn less fat.

Vegetarian Weight Loss Tip #4 - Sleep to Lose Weight

Honestly, there's no hard-and-fast rules on how many hours you should sleep. But just make sure you turn in before 11 P.M. as studies show that our bodies work optimally between 11 P.M. and 2 A.M. at repairing body cells and tissues.

Having more healthy cells and tissues will definitely improve your metabolism since it is your cells and tissues that metabolize your calories to fuel your bodily functions, after all.

Bonus Tip for Effective Vegetarian Weight Loss

When you apply the aforementioned weight loss techniques, you should naturally visit toilet at least once a day for "big" business. That's good. But sometimes your stressful workload might hinder your call of nature. Leaving waste in your body for too long will intoxicate your body and impair your fat burning capability. Hence, block out 30 - 45 minutes a day to calm yourself down to help improve your bowel movement. A well cleansed and detoxified body will lose weight at its peak, particularly when you're a vegetarian.

Proven Tips for Overweight Vegetarians to Lose Weight the Vegetarian Way

I've worked with quite a number of overweight vegetarians and help them lose weight vegetarian style effectively. My method is very simple. Find out the causes of your overweight problem and then work reverse to counteract the effect. Simply put, if there are things you're doing to gain weight, there must be things you can do to lose back the weight again. Let's go identify what exactly triggers your weight gain and turn you into an overweight vegetarian. Then from there, we'll apply the right cure to your fat problem, and lose weight vegetarian easily and safely.

1. Have You Been Eating Lots of Sweetened Food?

Most sweetened foods are created with refined sugar because it's cheap. Your body will need to use up 27 key nutrients (calcium, magnesium, potassium, vitamin B1, B2 etc) just to digest this little white devil. These 27 nutrients are actually meant to keep your metabolism functioning properly so as to help you maintain your weight. That's why those who include lots of high-sugar food in their vegetarian diet tend to have their midsection grow unstoppably.

Tip: Substitute with vegetarian foods made from unrefined sugar since it contains useful minerals, unlike simple sugar which carries nothing good for you but calories. However, control your intake even though it's unrefined because unrefined sugar also carries high calories.

2. Did You Eat Plenty of Vegetables?

I've seen overweight vegetarians eating fruits, nuts and seeds and other whole grain foods, except vegetables. They don't eat vegetables probably because they don't like its bland taste and texture. No doubt these people lose weight vegetarian initially, but they soon reach a weight loss plateau for not getting a full spectrum of nutrients in their vegetarian diets.

Tip: Include vegetables by blending with fruits into smoothies for easier consumption. Make it a 2:3 (vegetable to fruit) ratio.

3. Have You Been Eating Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP)?

TVP is helpful in transitioning to a full vegetarian. However, ingesting too much can increase your total caloric intake because most TVP foods are infused with simple sugar, sodium and bad saturated fat.

Tip: Try to phase out your TVP one by one and increase your whole food intake like fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, legumes, whole grains etc.

These are just the 3 common fattening causes for most overweight vegetarians. In a nutshell, to lose weight vegetarian effectively, you must control your calorie intake and boost your metabolism. Once you have these 2 elements in place, you can easily write your name off the "Overweight Vegetarian Club".

How to Break Weight Loss Plateau for Vegetarians

As an overweight vegetarian who's happily losing weight with a vegetarian weight loss diet, you can't escape the fate of hitting weight loss plateau, that is, you manage to lose 10 or even 40 pounds and you still have more to go, but somehow you got stuck. Your weight just wouldn't budge an ounce. What can you do?

Actually, there's no such thing as weight loss plateau in my opinion. The actual plateau lies in your food choices and your vegetarian lifestyle. Here are the 5 strategies to help you break your "weight loss plateau" and lose weight as a vegetarian. If you apply them correctly with good common sense, you'll slim down all the way till you reach your ideal weight and shape. Let's get started.

1. Include All-Round Nutrients in Your Vegetarian Weight Loss Diet

Imagine every day you eat oatmeal for breakfast, fruit salad for lunch and curried chickpeas for dinner, how many pounds do you expect to lose with that boring diet?

Even if you change the meal plans a bit is not enough. Get creative and start eating more varieties of food. For example, today your breakfast is protein smoothie, tomorrow it becomes oatmeal with raisins, then day after make rainbow salad as breakfast. Same goes for your lunch and dinner. Change your vegetarian meal plan to stimulate the "senses" of your fat-burning system.

Tip: Always include lots of fibrous foods such as vegetables in your meals. Vegetables carry low calorie but yet their high-fiber content will make you feel full easily so you won't get into trouble with binge eating. They help increase your bowel movement for daily detoxifying too. A cleanse body will burn fat efficiently and effectively.

2. Zig-Zag Calorie Vegetarian Meal Plans for Weight Loss

When you keep eating a fixed amount of calories, your body will auto-adjust to burn just that amount, nothing more, nothing less. To overcome this "defect", keep changing the amount of your calorie intake.

Assuming you need about 1800 calories a day. Take it for 2 days, then on day 3 switch to a lower calorie meal, say 1550 calories. And on day 4, go up to 1700 calories for 1 day then drop the calorie again, increase and decrease and so on… you'll burn more body fat over time this way.

Warning: When controlling caloric intake, do not consume less than 85% of your total daily calorie needs as a safety measure. The whole idea is, keep your stomach at a satiety level of 70%. Bottom line - never let your stomach go hungry.

3. Turn On to Interval Training for More Fat Loss

Don't keep to a specific pattern of exercising. Change your workout routine. For example, stop doing the same old brisk-walking every day. Start to do walk-jog-walk-jog to make your metabolism work a bit more. Stop doing fast pushups, start slowing down its pace and you'll raise the intensity level, thus stepping up your metabolic rate further.

Whatever you do with your exercise, inject changes every other day to give your metabolism something new to work with, and you'll break your weight loss plateau with exercise.

4. Split Up Your Vegetarian Weight Loss Meals

Break up the portion size of your main meals into two additional snacks that you can insert in between them, like this: breakfast (7 - 8 A.M.), morning snack (10 - 10:30 A.M.), lunch (12 - 1 P.M.), afternoon snack (3 - 3:30 P.M.) and dinner (6 - 7 P.M.).

This will keep your metabolism at an active level throughout the day. Quit your supper to avoid storing excess calories while you sleep.

5. Never Skip Breakfast

Even if you don't feel hungry in the morning, don't wait until your stomach rumbles then you start taking breakfast. Take your breakfast as early as 7 A.M. for best fat-burning response. Don't think that skipping breakfast will make you lose more fat. You won't. Instead, skipping breakfast will make you absorb more unnecessary calories when you start taking your lunch.

These are the 5 keys to breaking weight loss plateau. Just remember, whatever vegetarian foods you eat and whatever workouts you do, change the routine often, and you'll find that your body becomes very active in burning the excess calories from your fat storage. Once you break your weight loss plateau, don't forget to pass these strategies on to your fellow overweight vegetarians. Enjoy!

Why Junk Food is So Addictive

It is safe to say that a lot of people like junk food, some more than others and some not at all, but many like it. Perhaps it’s the convenience, the taste, the price or our emotional state that makes us go for it, or is there actually something in the food itself? If your team or colleagues are running stressed at work, convenience options won’t be far away. And having people make these choices on a regular basis can be quite damaging to the corporate health score in your business.

Can junk food become an addiction, and what is it that makes it addictive – I mean, it’s not a cigarette, right? Well, for some people it seems just as bad and there is actually both a natural and an un-natural explanation to why that is. Hear me out.

A Winning Combination Back in the caveman days fruit and vegetables were seasonal, meat was hunted (not farmed) and the only cooking done was over an open fire (if any). This made our diets limited in carbohydrates, fats (because wild animals tend to be leaner) and salt. So whenever our bodies ran into any of these three, our taste buds went bananas to make sure that we had as much as possible, as we never knew when to get it next. Also, our brain only runs on blood sugar, which is made primarily from the carbohydrates that we consume. And sugar (a simple carbohydrate) converts even faster than slower alternatives and so our brain is extremely keen to get some. Now think about fast food; it’s high in salt, fat and carbohydrates and often washed down with a drink of sweet sugary goodness. Our bodies love it! The only difference is, we can get it whenever we want it nowadays, but our bodies haven’t caught up to that fact yet, so we still crave it like there’s no tomorrow.

MSG Keeps Us Coming Back For More MSG, or Monosodium Glutamate, is a flavour enhancer common in processed foods and especially Asian foods. It is the food industries own anti-appetite suppressant. It achieves this by stimulating our pancreas to release insulin into our system, just like carbohydrates do, raising our blood sugar levels quickly only to drop not long after. This quick drop is what makes us feel hungry again.

What Does It Mean It means that our bodies prefer junk food for many reasons. The more you eat, the more you are likely to want to eat and the harder it will be to cut down. Because not only have you got the winning combination of nutrients and minerals, plus the MSG, you will now also have the habit of eating a lot of junk food. Those three bad boys combined may be difficult to break apart, but it is far from impossible. I would suggest just going cold turkey if you have the will power for it, otherwise, cut down and replace the junk with an equally tasty but less processed and healthier alternative.

Why It is Important to Eat Healthy

Everyone has heard the saying," You are what you eat." When we are younger we can eat unhealthy foods and seem to get by for a while, but as we grow older, our unhealthy lifestyle will catch up with us in the form of illness and disease. Most of the foods you buy from the grocery store are processed, meaning they are manufactured in a factory and most often contain littler nutritional value. Even though companies will enrich certain foods or put labels that they are all natural, nothing is better than the real thing. Real food is nature's food and it is what we need to build healthy bodies that are disease free and full of energy.

Real foods consist of most everything on the outer aisles of the grocery store. They include fruits and vegetables, low-fat meats, and dairy products. However, all real foods aren't equal because most of our the real foods we eat are laced with pesticides, injected with growth hormones, or raised in unwholesome in environments. Therefore, on top of purchasing real foods, you want to buy organic fruits and vegetables and meats or poultry that are farm-raised, cage-free, and without preservatives and other toxic substances.

Below are some more health tips that will help you to eat more nutritiously so you can maintain your health for years to come

Get enough sleep, at least 7 ½ hours per night. Think about how can you make bedtime a daily ritual? Eat organic fruits, vegetables, and meats. It is better to pay a little more for these and eat less of them than eat foods that are toxic to your body. Most conventional produce are sprayed with harmful pesticides and animals that provide our meats are injected with hormones and preservatives. If possible, purchase meats that come from graze fed animals or cage-free chickens. Buy locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables, produce in season and grown locally will have the highest nutritional content.

Plant a small garden. If you don't have a yard, plant tomatoes, herbs, or small vegetable plants in containers.

Use only non-toxic cleansers and compounds.

Avoid processed foods, a processed food is anything altered from it's natural state and packaged in a box or packaging that has ingredients you can't pronounce.

Manage stress, practice some for of meditation each day.

Eat three meals a day; don't skip meals. Make a protein smoothie to replace any meals you may skip

Eat less, but more quality foods.

Invest in a juicer.

If time permits, cook majority of meals on the weekend, this lends to quick meal preparation. Also, prepare salad items in advance by placing individual items (onion slices, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc) in baggies or Tupperware for quick retrieval.

Fill up on health foods before going to parties or other events where food will be served.

Eat on a smaller plate.

Make enough for dinner so that you can take it the next day for lunch.

Listen to your body.

About Soy- We have been bombarded with the positive effects of soy on lowering heart disease and reducing systems of menopause. However, if you do a little research on soy, first you will find that most soy is genetically modified and second, it inhibits our thyroid gland from producing necessary hormones and could contribute to hypothyroidism. Therefore, if you use soy, use it in moderation.

Don't eat when you are not hungry, stop when you are 80% full.

5 Best Quick Weight Loss Tips That Work !

When someone says they want some quick weight loss tips, then no doubt some think that it is impossible to lose weight quickly and more importantly, keep that weight off!

Well they would be wrong because it is very possible to lose weight quickly and keep it off, and it starts by employing some of the basics that we pretty much all know.

Here is the 5 best quick weight loss tips:

1. Eat breakfast

First of all make sure breakfast is eaten every day and a healthy breakfast at that. Skipping breakfast is not what anyone looking for quick weight loss tips should be doing.

Eating a healthy breakfast will kick start the metabolism when you wake, after it has slowed down during the night.

Think of it this way, your metabolism is like a furnace, it needs to be fed with fuel in order for it to work at its optimum best.

So get your metabolism working as soon as you wake with some fruit, cereals and a glass of water and it will begin burning fat straight away.

2.Drink 2 liter of water per day water

Drinking approximately two liters of water per day is also a great one of the quick weight loss tips that work.

Water keeps the body hydrated and stops it holding onto fluid which will make you feel bloated and increase your weight. Sometimes tricky to understand, but the more water we drink, the more water our bodies naturally let go of.

Not only that, drinking plenty of water helps to lower the amount of fats that the body stores. So add water to your diet and you're bound to lose weight.

3.Avoid salt

On the same note, salt is no friend to anyone looking to lose weight. Salt will make your body want to retain water which will give you that bloated feeling, so the more salt that can be cut out of the diet, the more weight will be lost.

What's also good to know when looking for tips to lose weight quickly, is that some foods require the body to work that much harder to break them down.

The results of which are that your body will use up far more calories as it digests them.

4.Eat raw fruits,vegetables and wholegrain

Furthermore, wholegrain also falls into the fiber groups of food and anytime we eat more fiber our bodies feel fuller than they actually are.

So as quick weight loss tips goes, making sure that you are eating sufficient fiber, such as brown rice, wholegrain breads and also leafy vegetables is a great way to lose weight.

5.Do an exercise

The last and most important thing is, including some physical exercise in your weekly routine will be of benefit. Not only will it help to lose weight, but you will begin to strengthen your bones and muscles and your stamina and mental abilities will also increase.

Lose Weight Quickly With A Fasting Diet Plan

Fasting diet plans are a great way to cleanse one's body from toxic compounds that accumulate in your body over time. The toxins come from all the packaged foods and synthetic products that we consume. Everyone these days knows that processed food is bad for us but this type of food has become a staple in many people lives. Fasting diets are also an effective method as a short term weight loss program that can be used to kick-off a long term weight loss program. You never want to fast to long because it is bad for you body and your metabolism will creep to a stand still, which will never allow you to burn calories and fat. A good example of a healthy fasting diet is cabbage soup diet, a 7 day diet that consists of consuming cabbage soup and water, and also a few restricted types of foods.

Cabbage soup provides your body with a healthy supply of vitamins and minerals when you are on a fasting diet so you still get proper nutrition but since it has so few calories you don't put any extra weight on. Now this is not something you can survive on indefinitely, it is just a short term technique. This diet will enable you to lose eight to ten pounds within just a week while still providing a steady supply of nutrients.

The recipe is composed of green peppers, whole tomatoes, carrots, mushrooms, cabbage, celery, Lipton soup mix, bouillon, V8 juice, and seasonings. As you can see with so many vegetables and seasonings it is still quite tasty. Apart from these components, you may also alter the recipe so that it will not be boring through the entire period of the fasting diet. All you have to do is be creative but within reason because you still can only have certain types of foods on this diet.

As for the fasting diet program itself, for the duration of day one, consume only the cabbage soup and any fruits with the exception of banana. You may drink unsweetened tea, black coffee and water since most liquids won't lead to weight gain, but be sure to stay away from any beverages with high sugar content. For the next day, take in fresh, raw or cooked vegetables except dry beans, peas, and sweet corn, as well as much cabbage soup that you want. Do not eat fruits. For dinner, eat a big baked potato. For the third day, eat as much as fruit, vegetables, and soup that you like.

For the fourth day, have eight bananas and consume as many glasses of skim milk, along with the cabbage soup. For the fifth day, you may eat meat by means of 300-500g of beef, broiled or baked skin free chicken, or broiled fish. Eat the cabbage soup at least once. For the sixth day, eat ground beef and fresh veggies or salad, coupled with at least one serving of cabbage soup. On the last day, you may commence eating unsweetened fruit juice, vegetables, rice, and cabbage soup.

Coconut Oil for Vegetarian Weight Loss

Is it true that a vegetarian can eat coconut oil for weight loss? Many people thought that coconut oil (primarily containing saturated fat) bears the same fatty chain structure as animal saturated fats. Here's the truth - animal saturated fat molecules attach to one another in long chain which your body finds hard to break down and thus store it as fat very easily, whereas coconut oil's saturated fat molecules form medium chain structure and readily breaks down for energy use during digestion.

This in turn boosts your metabolism and burn fat off your fat storage. That explains why most people drop their pants size from eating coconut oil for weight loss. As a vegetarian, you'll get even more rewarding results as your body got less toxins to deal with since you don't ingest the toxin-laced meat.

Here's another big advantage of eating coconut oil for weight loss. Being smaller in size, MCFAs yield fewer calories than other fats - only 6.8 calories per gram. This means if you replace other oils (which carry 9 calories per gram) with coconut oil, you'll benefit from lower caloric intake.

Imagine your metabolism speeds up, at the same time you're ingesting lower calories, you can expect to burn more calories off your excess fat storage. That's how you can lose weight effectively as a vegetarian with this medium-chain fat-burning oil.

How to Eat Coconut Oil for Vegetarian Weight Loss

But here's the kicker. No matter how fat-burning the oil is, like any other foods, when you consume excess of it which the level of your metabolism is not able to burn it off totally, extra calories that left unused will still get deposited as fat in your energy bank. Hence, add the right amount in your vegetarian weight loss diet and you'll lose fat effectively.

When you're starting out with putting coconut oil in your vegetarian diet for weight loss, because this fat-burning oil is extremely effective in curing constipation due to its high soluble fiber content, you should take up 1 tablespoon (1/2 in morning, 1/2 at night) first for at least 7 days.

Observe your body condition and if you feel it works well with you, up the intake to 2 and then progressively to 3 tablespoons later on. After several months when you feel you can ingest more, you can actually increase the intake up to 5 tablespoons spread out in a day. Adding it to your vegetarian weight loss diet progressively is the key to good health and shape.

That's what you should do when using coconut oil for weight loss. If you up the amount too fast, the oil may give you a diarrhea-like effect. So, work with your body closely for maximum fat loss without risking your health. Any food that's good when eat in the wrong way can affect you negatively, regardless of whether you're a vegetarian or not.

Oh, last but not least, buy only virgin coconut oil because it is unrefined and will give you the best fat-burning effect. Bear in mind.

Best Way to Lose Weight - Which of these 7 Ways to Lose Weight Works Best for You

What do you want to achieve? Weight loss alone or both weight loss and health? Let me show you which of these 7 ways you should go with for best effective weight loss and optimum health.

1. Liposuction - A cosmetic surgery using a hollow tube and a suction device to help remove fat from any parts of your body. However, the death toll as a consequence of post-operative complications rates between 20 and 100 deaths per 100,000 procedures. People who go with lipo usually want a quick fix to help them lose weight and sculpt their body without going through exercising and dieting. Though death rate is pretty low, most people suffer some sorts of complications, and this number has gone unreported.

2. Gastric Banding - Usually a final resort proposed for extremely obese people whose lives are at stake and need immediate weight loss solution. Like liposuction, it involves risks. Death rate is about 50 deaths per 100,000 operations.

3. Body Wrap - A weird way to wrap yourself up like a mummy but yet you're losing water weight instead of fat mass. However, it's a cheap way to cheat yourself - just buy some plastic film roll or wrap sheets and you can do in the comfort of your home. But again, you won't lose fat in it.

4. B12 Shot - Vitamin B12 is one of the key nutrients we all need. But some people claim that it can help you boost metabolism and lose weight by injecting B12 directly into your muscle. You may experience side effects of bloated stomach, heavier and longer menstrual cycle (for women), difficulty in breathing and swallowing, tightness of chest, racing heartbeat, etc. In fact, we don't need extra shot of B12 for weight loss, so long as we eat healthily, our metabolism will function at its peak and burn fat effectively. And you don't get a single side effect.

5. Acupuncture - This therapy works as a complement to your change of lifestyle instead of a sole weight loss solution to help you get rid of the extra ugly fat. Acupuncture works by inserting needles into specific points on your body to release endorphins which can combat your stress, frustration and anxiety that usually associate with binge eating. With less binge eating, you lose weight.

6. Tobacco Smoking - Some people smoke to help them control their weight as tobacco contains high level of nicotine that is effective in suppressing hunger so you don't overeat. But alas, this way of weight loss is so idiotic that wise people would never touch. It does nothing positive to your health and 5 - 8 million people died of smoking worldwide every year. If you think it looks cool on you, tell you what, a survey reported that 86% of people find their opposite sex who smoke look repulsive rather than attractive. And you stink too.

7. Vegetarian Diet - A healthy diet that advocates eating whole natural foods which are packed with essential nutrients such as fiber, complex-carbohydrate, full protein and various other vitamins and minerals to maintain a healthy body that will take care of the weight automatically. In fact, you can easily fit this diet into your long-term lifestyle once you reach your ideal weight and shape, unlike many other diets that are designed to help weight loss but don't provide nutrients for your body to operate optimally.

I save the best for the last - vegetarian diet, because it's really the best way to lose weight and you can even take the diet as a permanent lifestyle, unlike other weight loss diets that you can only hold on to for short-term only. I'm sure you'd agree with me on that, but will you pick up this healthful choice over your cravings for meat? The choice is yours ;)

Vegetarian Weight Loss - How to Speed Up Metabolism for Vegetarians to Burn More Fat

How to lose weight as a vegetarian? Unfortunately, you've become one overweight vegetarian who has fallen prey to the modern heavily-processed vegetarian diets. So obviously, you just need to change your junk diet into a truly healthy vegetarian weight loss diet for fat loss. But is this effective enough? It is, but you can burn more fat faster when you apply these 7 tips that help to speed up your metabolism.

1. Water Blocks Extra Calorie Intake

Losing weight doesn't come as a consequence of burning more calories, but also to be able to stop excess calories from pouring in. You might mistake dehydration for hunger. So when you feel hungry, pick up a glass of water first, then wait for 10 - 20 minutes for your stomach to "tell" your brain if it's really hungry or not. If no, then you've just saved yourself from scooping in more calories you don't need.

2. More Meals Rev Up Your Metabolism

Insert snack in between your breakfast, lunch and dinner. Doing so will first speed up your metabolism and then maintain it at fat-burning level throughout the day. Remember, never skip any meal. And since you're taking more meals, you should take your breakfast, lunch and dinner in smaller portions. An extremely effective technique to help vegetarians lose weight easily.

3. "Spice Up" Your Metabolism

Ever felt the burning sensation in your body after taking spicy food? That is not just a sensation, but a chemical reaction caused by capsaicin in the chili in boosting your metabolism. It also helps to suppress your appetite and craving for sweet food, so you won't gain weight easily. But overdose can irritate your stomach and trigger acid reflux, which can cause you to lose sleep. Moderation is the key.

4. Rope in Calcium for an Extra Metabolic Boost

Food rich in calcium can raise your body heat and speed up your metabolism. But don't take calcium supplements as they contain only small fraction of elemental calcium that your body can absorb, together with other funny chemicals like carbonate, citrate, lactate or gluconate. You know them? Never mind, that's not important.

Just remember, consume calcium the natural way via soy milk, rice milk, cornmeal, cereal, collards, rhubarb, spinach etc. (In fact, dairy milk contains the highest amount of calcium, but I encourage vegetarians to avoid dairy products since dairy animals are not treated fairly in the process of obtaining the milk. What's more, dairy milk is not as naturally healthy as before as those animals are being fed hormone-laced diet.)

5. Move Right to Lose More

Put down your cardio and pick up interval training today. Numerous studies and researches have proven that interval training can boost your metabolism all day long, even hours post exercise. Cardio will only keep your fat burning during the exercise bout. Once you stop exercising, your fat stops burning. As a vegetarian, you shouldn't ignore this super weight loss tip.

6. The Early You Move, The More You Lose

An experiment conducted in Australia shows that working out in the morning burns more fat than doing it in the afternoon and evening due to an easier increase in metabolism in the morning. But if you find hard to work out in the morning due to shift work or odd working hours, then any time in the day works fine.

7. Get More Cells Repaired

Getting enough rest and sleep is one of the most vital keys to speeding up metabolism. But sadly, most people (vegetarians or non-vegetarians) don't realize that. When you improve your sleep quality, more cells in your body will get repaired. Since it is your cells that metabolize the calories consumed, the more healthy cells you got, the greater your metabolism will be.

Thus, stop being a night owl and start flopping into your bed early at night. Turning in before 11 P.M. is the best time since our body repairs cells and tissues at its peak between 11 P.M. and 2 A.M.

In short, increasing your metabolism is the key to effective fat loss. But you must couple with an effective vegetarian weight loss diet to achieve maximum fat loss faster and easier.

Does Coffee Provide Weight Loss Benefits?

This is truly the million dollar question because the diet industry is more popular than ever. Still, if you worry about having to give up your cup of Joe when hoping to lose weight, that may no longer be the case. Recent research has shown that coffee is full of a number of health benefits, and it can even help you drop a few pounds!

So many people choose to start their day with a fresh cup of Joe, yet many people stumble upon the question as to whether or not coffee helps with a weight loss plan. Health experts have revealed that it is safe to drink several cups of coffee per day, and it may even help you lose weight. Coffee provides the benefits of reducing the risk of type II diabetes, and it has also been proven to provide energy for long workouts so that you can have added stamina to burn extra calories. Even better, coffee has a compound to block chemicals in the body that create muscle soreness to help you recover even more quickly from your workout. This is an absolute must for anyone on a diet and exercise plan because we all know how difficult it can be to bounce back after a tough workout.

Research has also shown that coffee does not contribute to heart disease as many people once thought. Caffeine in coffee boosts the metabolism to help your body burn extra calories all day, even when at rest. The important thing to keep in mind is that not all coffee is good because we are all well aware that there are many fancy coffee beverages on the market that contain hundreds of additional calories. As an example, you will need to cut out the specialized Starbucks beverages that are topped with whipped cream since they could weigh in at more than 500 calories per drink. Simply shocking! If you add sugar and cream to your morning coffee, it will add on extra calories, and it may cause you to crave sugar all day. Otherwise, use Splenda and organic milk in your coffee if you don't want to drink it black.

The next danger to keep in mind associated with drinking coffee is all of the snacks that go along with it. If you have a doughnut or muffin every time you order your morning coffee, you need to be careful. A single doughnut may have up to 300 calories, and we all know that you probably won't eat just one. Even a seemingly healthy muffin can have anywhere from 400 to 700 calories, which is more than you should have in a typical meal!

As you begin your diet plan, don't try to reduce your calories and cut out coffee altogether. Coffee is a very healthy beverage if you drink it wisely and avoid the bad foods that often accompany it!

Vegetarian Weight Loss Diet - 5 Things You Must Know to Lose Weight with Vegetarian Diet

What vegetarian diet are you eating for weight loss? If you're not getting amazing results from that, then you should take note of what I'm going to show you. Not all vegetarian diet will help you lose weight effectively. The diet needs to carry all sorts of essential nutrients as well as the special weight loss ingredients to serve the purpose. In short, an effective vegetarian weight loss diet should achieve these 5 things for you:

1. Give you all essential nutrients your body needs to perform its daily tasks and functions. Our body is made up of trillions of cells. If you don't give what they need, they'll not perform at full tank. They control everything in our body, including metabolism that controls and manages your weight.

2. Make you feel full easily. A successful vegetarian weight loss diet should fill you up easily with its fiber-rich ingredients and foods, so you'll lose all the cravings for sugar and other high-calorie processed vegetarian foods that make you fat.

3. Make you feel full longer. Again, it's the fiber at work. Fiber is hard to digest and hence able to help you stay satisfied over longer hours.

4. Help you burn more calories than the calorie content of the food itself. This requires your food to contain both complex-carb and fiber to get the effect. Complex-carb takes longer to break down than simple-carb food, and fiber helps to slow down the digestion even more. Hence, your vegetarian weight loss foods in your diet plan should bear these 2 vital components.

5. Help you remove waste EVERY DAY. Whenever I get bogged down with work and try to eat as conveniently as I could without due consideration for the quality of food, I'll have a hard time clearing my waste and having my lower tummy sticking out unsightly. Instead of every day, sometimes it took 2 - 3 days to detox. Learning that, I started to choose my vegetarian diet very carefully even during my busy period. And my bowel moves 1 - 2 times daily and flattens my tummy every day. It's the fiber at work again.

In a nutshell, your vegetarian weight loss diet should contain 30 - 35 grams of fiber daily from various ingredients - not just sticking to a small group of food. This way you'll also absorb many other important vitamins and minerals your body needs for proper bodily and metabolic functioning. Oh, don't forget to drink enough water to soften your stool and let it pass out smoothly.

How to Lose Weight the Vegetarian Way

Two things you must get it right in order to lose weight the vegetarian way - watch what you feed your stomach with and what you do to your body. However, because you're not eating meat, so you actually got an edge over meat-eaters such that your body doesn't need to deal with the toxins, antibiotic residues and bacteria (like E.coli) coming from dead animals. So in a way, you should lose weight as a vegetarian more easily when you apply the vegetarian weight loss tips below.

1. Skipping Meals to Lose Belly Fat?

Many vegetarians thought by skipping a meal or 2 will help them lose weight faster. Wrong! Skipping meals will only slow down your metabolism. And when you start eating after starving, your body will absorb more calories than usual to store as body fat as it fears that it might not get any food supply in future. To make matter worse, your metabolism has slowed down due to starvation, and so you can only convert little calories into energy as fuel, leaving pounds of calories to get stocked up as body fat.

2. Eat More to Lose Weight the Vegetarian Way

When you eat more meals in a day but in smaller portion sizes, you're in fact keeping your body metabolically active throughout the day because your body is getting a continuous supply of food gradually over time, instead of getting a gush of energy from food in one large meal each from breakfast, lunch and dinner.

To lose fat effectively, you should take 5 vegetarian meals like this - breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack and dinner. Your meals should comprise high-fiber foods loaded with complex-carbohydrate and other key nutrients so you won't feel hungry and take in excess calories so easily.

3. Rid Sugar in Your Meal Plans for Quicker Belly Fat Loss

Imagine on one hand you're eating those vegetarian weight loss foods, on the other hand you're ingesting weight gain foods, the end result? You lose nothing.

Sugar is one of the greatest culprits that causes belly fat to grow and makes it doubly hard for vegetarians to lose weight. That explains why more vegetarians are gaining weight. It depends on what type of vegetarian foods you eat. That said, quit your refined sugar intake totally.

Tip: When you apply the previous tip and take more fibrous foods, you should be able to stop your sugar cravings instantly and lose fat more easily.

4. Your Stomach Needs No More than 70% to Lose Weight the Vegetarian Style

Your stomach doesn't like to be full. So, always feed your stomach to 70% fullness. But a common problem to many people, even vegetarians is they only realize they become 80 or even 100% full 10 - 20 minutes after they finished eating. That's because your stomach needs about 10 - 20 minutes (sometimes only 2 minutes) to tell your brain your satiety level, so when you eat, try to reduce your speed by chewing more times than you normally would. This way, you'll find yourself getting no more than 70%.

Tip: To avoid wasting food, always request for the exact portion size you need where possible when you eat out.

5. Drink Zero Calories to Achieve More Fat Loss

No beverages beat water when it comes to stimulating your metabolism and help you shed the extra pounds, regardless of whether you're a vegetarian or not.

You might not get used to changing to drinking plain water overnight. Here's what you can do - starting today, take 1/2 a glass for 2 days, then on the 3rd day you increase to one glass and so on. After 8 days, you should be able to replace your unhealthy beverages with just plain water. If you can make changes within 3 days, why not?

6. Active Rest During Exercising Speeds Up Your Metabolism

A study conducted on cycling shows that interval cycling burns more fat than cycling at a steady pace. What does it mean? When you cycle fast, then slows down for "active rest" then speeds up again, you'll rev up your metabolism. Same thing applies to any interval training.

But remember, though interval training helps to burn more fat, you'll find hard to lose weight without a proper vegetarian weight loss meal plan.

7. The Better Your Sleep Quality, the More Fat You Burn

It all comes down to getting your metabolism to run at full speed. Hence, catch quality sleep because a rejuvenated body will definitely burn more fat than a sluggish body with sleeping disorder.

These 7 tips are just appetizers for you to lose weight as a vegetarian. But they're enough to let you see some stunning results in the next 7 - 10 days.

Vegetarian Weight Loss - 1 Tip to Help Overweight Vegetarians Break Weight Loss Plateau

Are you hitting a weight loss plateau now? Yes, vegetarians do face weight loss plateau like non-vegetarians. Although increasing your whole food intake in your vegetarian weight loss diet does help you shed excess body fat. However, up to certain degree only. Why do I say that? There are overweight vegetarians who manage to lose 20 - 40 pounds, and they stop there. They need to shed more belly fat but no matter what they do (according to what they say) they just couldn't lose more stomach fat. Obviously, they're not achieving effective vegetarian weight loss. What went wrong?

Why Can't Overweight Vegetarians Lose More Weight?

Before we get down to why vegetarians can't lose weight, I think we should first take a quick look at what causes weight gain. Becoming a vegetarian doesn't guarantee you'll lose weight. When you eat more refined, processed vegetarian foods, you gain pounds due to their high-sugar, high-salt and high-fat content, of course, plus other chemical additives (added to enhance color and flavor) that impair your body and trigger metabolic disorder.

Upon learning that, you turn smart and start switching to whole natural vegetarian foods for good health and of course, to help you lose weight. Yes, it works. But after losing some inches on your belly and shedding as many as 40 pounds, your fat-burning engine stops all of a sudden. Hey, you still got some stomach fat to burn. Not forgetting your thighs and buttocks too. But it stops losing fat? Why?

After some information exchange with these overweight vegetarians who can't wait to lose more weight, I discover the one issue that has been bugging them since they were young, and even becoming a vegetarian didn't seem to change much. That is, they don't like to eat vegetables.

What has eating less vegetable got to do with weight loss plateau? Listen, vegetables can effectively purge toxins out of your body. These toxins may have been amassed during those times when you were still happily enjoying your "tasty" prepackaged processed food. Your body requires a broad spectrum of nutrients to wash out the toxins completely, before your fat-burning engine can start running at full tank. So, leaving veggies out from your weight loss diet or eating less of it can skew your vegetarian weight loss plan.

Simple Solution to Break Weight Loss Plateau

By the way, what makes you cringe at eating vegetables? Their taste, green smell or you simply don't like the green leafy color or the way they look? Whatever your reasons may be, you want to lose weight as a vegetarian and break weight loss plateau, you must try to increase you veggie intake. Here I show you a tip to achieve that yet avoiding triggering your dislike for vegetables at the same time.

Blend veggies into your fruit smoothie in a (fruit to vegetable) 4:2 ratio. This way you won't have to put up with the "green" smell or flavor but yet get to savor the goodness of Mother Nature's weight loss foods. Here's a sample recipe to help you start off:

Vegetarian Weight Loss Smoothie

- 2 cups of butterhead lettuce

- 1 carrot

- 2 bananas

- 1 mango

- 1 cup of strawberries

- 1 cup of water

I got to warn you. Sticking to just this recipe may not work wonders. You should in fact, change the recipe with various other ingredients every day. Once you feel ok with the 4:2 ratio, increase it to 3:2 to invite more vegetables in your weight loss diet for a more effective vegetarian weight loss. Oh, you can take this smoothie as your breakfast or dinner. Bear in mind that your lunch should be just as nutritious or you won't break your weight loss plateau easily.

Fat Free Milk Promotes Weight Loss after Workout

Fat Free Milk Promotes Weight Loss after Workout

Fat Free Milk Promotes Weight Loss after Workout

Fat free milk is a smart choice to cool down after a workout because it promotes muscle growth and weight loss, a new study shows.

Women who are trying to get in shape and muscle up may be tempted to down protein drinks after their workout. However, a new study shows that women may have better results by drinking two large glasses of milk instead.

Researchers at McMaster University in Canada found that women who drank two large glasses of fat free milk gained more muscle and lost more weight than those who drank protein energy drinks after weight training.

Many women don’t realize the health benefits of resistance training, according to Dr. Stuart Phillips, professor of kinesiology at McMaster University.

“Resistance training is not a typical choice of exercise for women, but the health benefits of resistance training are enormous,” he said in a news release, adding that it not only boosts strength and bone health, but also increases metabolic health in a way that other exercise routines cannot.

The study analyzed young women who had not previously participated in resistance training. Participants were not allowed to eat and were only allowed to drink water for the two hours prior to exercising. After finishing their workout routines — which consisted of pushing, pulling and leg exercises — one group of women consumed 500ml of fat free milk while the other drank a sugar based energy drink.

Researchers were surprised by the amount of fat loss in the women who drank milk instead of the protein shake. Phillips said those who drank the milk barely gained weight and what they gained in lean muscle balanced the loss of fat.

According to Phillips, the study showed that “simple things, like regular weightlifting exercise and milk consumption, work to substantially improve women’s body composition and health.”

A previous study found that men who exercised and drank milk also gained muscle and lost fat. Researchers speculate that the Vitamin D may play a role but are exactly why fat free milk promotes weight loss and muscle growth, and more studies are in the works.

Change Your Habits to Change Your Weight

Weight gain is a direct results of one’s habits. Conversely, weight loss or healthy weight maintenance is also the direct result of one’s habits. Inability to inculcate correct weight loss and weight maintenance habits is one of the main reasons for rebound weight gain.
Habits

Wikipedia defines habits as follows;

Habits are routines of behavior that are repeated regularly and tend to occur subconsciously, without directly thinking consciously about them. Habitual behavior sometimes goes unnoticed in persons exhibiting them, because it is often unnecessary to engage in self-analysis when undertaking in routine tasks.
Weight Gain or Maintaining Weight Loss is a Reflection of Your Habits

People do not gain weight over night. Weight gain is a long process. It is often the result of habits that that make it conducive for someone to gain weight. Since habits are planted so deep within the subconscious mind that most people may not even be aware of the habits that are causing them to gain weight.
Social Weight Gain Habits

Social habits are acts that people carry out socially in a fixed routine or in a fixed recognizable pattern. For instance, John goes out drinking with his buddies every Friday. He uses this as an excuse for relieving stress from the hard long week preceding it. Another example is of Albert who meets his buddies every Saturday to watch football. Watching the game is not the only thing that Albert and his buddies do. There is also plenty of beer and various types of junk food.

While there is nothing wrong with socializing, one needs to be be aware of social appointments that are contributing to weight gain or sabotaging weight loss efforts. Instead of watching football on television, why not play football or any other game you fancy. It gives you a chance to socialize while giving you an opportunity to trim your waist.
Mental Weight Gain Habits

Certain mental habits make you powerless when trying to lose weight. One such habit is procrastination. You know that you should lose weight but keep putting it off. This can be a serious problem for a lot of people.

In addition to this, there are those who are not able to prioritize important tasks to better manage their time. They fall prey to negative habits that do not add value to their lives but instead steal valuable time that could be channeled to useful activities such as exercise.

There are also those who suffer from excuse-itis. They have an endless list of excuses to justify their negative actions. Instead of taking the time to do what is necessary to lose weight, they spend all of their time justifying why weight loss is difficult.
Physical Weight Gain Habits

Physical weight gain habits are perhaps the most obvious and the easiest to change. Some of these habits include;

* Taking second helpings at lunch or dinner
* Snacking on junk food
* Consuming unnecessary liquid calories in the form of colas, sodas and lattes
* Missing breakfast or other main meals
* Keeping sweets, chocolates and other calorie dense food within easy reach
* Watching television when the time could be channeled towards exercise

Change Your Habits to Change Your Weight

Psychologists say that it takes about 21 days to change your habits. Once these habits have set in, they need to be reinforced for a period of time to create a deep groove within your subconscious mind. Unlike negative habits, positive habits require effort to enforce. It’s very much easier to sustain a negative habit than a positive habit.

For instance, it takes continued effort to wake up early every morning to exercise. It is easier to just sleep-in. But after some time, it becomes easier to wake up early in the morning to exercise as the habit has been deeply ingrained.
Replace Bad Habits with Healthy Habits

Someone serious about losing weight should do an honest self-evaluation of his or her habits. Look through all the activities in a typical week and highlight those that are contributing to weight gain.

It would also make sense to analyze eating habits to find those habits that are contributing to your waist line. Once you have identified habits that are making you fat, try replacing them with healthy eating habits. Create new patterns to offset the existing ones. Healthy eating habits would help you sustain the weight loss.

For instance, make it a habit to have breakfast every day. Keep junk food out of reach. Make it a habit to get exercise done as early in the day as possible. Avoid socializing in gatherings that sabotage your weight loss efforts. Once these new healthy habits have settled in, you will surely lose weight. As you adopt these habits deep within you, maintaining weight loss becomes a breeze.

What is normal weight obesity?

Detroit Women's Health ExaminerLaQuanda Randall

Most of us judge our health by our appearance. If we look good in certain outfits and our clothes are still fitting, we consider our weight to be a non-issue. Some people have maintained the same pant or dress size for most of their lives. As long as that size stays in the same range, there will be no cause for concern regarding their health and fitness.

However, more than half of adult Americans who are considered to be of normal weight, actually have a high percentage of body fat. According to the Mayo Clinic, as many as 30 million Americans who are of normal weight, may have the body fat of an obese person. This high body fat puts adults in jeopardy of getting the same life threatening health risks of a clinically obese individual. Those health risks include: diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and metabolic syndrome.

The researchers of the Mayo Clinic determined normal body weight by the use of Body Mass Index or BMI. The normal body fat percentage of men is somewhere between 18-26% and the normal body fat percentage of women is between 25-32%. The body fat of male athletes range from 6-13% and female athletes range from 14-20%. Those individuals with normal BMI who also have a higher than normal body fat percentage would fall into the category of normal weight obesity.

How do you measure body fat? The methods for measuring body fat range from the primitive and inexpensive to the highly technological and pricey. Skinfold calipers have been the standard in measuring body fat for many years. Although the method is not a perfect estimation, it is a good tool for the evaluation of body fat composition. Dual Energy X-ray absorptiometry or DXA is a newer and much more accurate method for determining body fat composition. However, this method could be quite expensive.

ABC.com reports today that doctors are not recommending body fat percentage testing for persons concerned about being normal weight obese. The waistline may be the key to determining if you are at a normal or healthy weight. Extra pounds around the mid-section is the most dangerous aspect of being overweight. The extra fat puts stress and strain on the heart and lungs. Having extra fat around the waist and love handles puts your health at the greatest risk.

If you are concerned about being obese or normal weight obese, there are ways to jump into action. In Metro Detroit, the weight loss business is in full swing and there are plenty of options for you to choose from. Centers such as Medical Weight Loss Clinic focus on a medical approach to weight loss and normalizing body fat. While facilities such as Curves concentrates on increasing physical activity with both cardio and strength training exercise. Both offer locations throughout the Metro Detroit area. Oakland County's Adventure Boot Camp for Women takes a jump start approach to improving your health with a 4 week outdoor bootcamp that provides nutritional counseling, fitness instruction, and motivational training. The Boot Camp boasts an expected result of 3-5% body fat loss upon completion.

New Devices Help Shed Pounds
Losing weight has become a high-tech proposition, thanks to a few new products that help people with their calorie spending.

Sweden’s Karolinska Institute recently released something known as the Mandometer, which keeps track of how much a person eats and how fast they’re eating it. If the person is eating too quickly, the device tells them to slow down. According to recent results, the device was tested on a group of obese children and within one year, their eating speed decreased by 11 percent.

Exercise and Weight Loss: What’s the Connection?

By Katherine Hobson

The role of exercise in weight loss is always a hot topic. Research on successful losers often cites exercise as a top maintenance strategy (one study found those who kept the pounds off averaged a whopping 275 minutes of working out a week), but without some attention to diet
, you're not likely to lose significant weight. Exercise alone, while it has many benefits independent of weight control, doesn't always do the trick. But even for those who believe that exercise is key to weight loss, there's a big debate over what kind of workouts—steady aerobic sessions? interval training? strength training?—is ideal.

The exercise scientists who write The Science of Sport blog are taking an in-depth look at exercise and weight loss. Their series began as a response to a Time magazine article questioning whether exercise was "useless" as a way to control weight, and it has already examined the notions of "calories in, calories out" and fat burning. Check out the blog for the entire series, which is ongoing. In their second installment, they directly answer the question that plenty of readers have asked me: I started an exercise plan a month ago, so why haven't I lost a pound?

If you are embarking on a weight loss plan, and have yet to see significant results despite diligently exercising for 45 minutes a day, then the answer is likely that you still haven't addressed the other side of the scale adequately. If you have reached a plateau in weight loss, then the same may be true—it's time to consider how much you eat, when you eat it, and what you are eating, because you may unwittingly be negating your exercise with simple dietary practices.

New Weight Loss Procedure Provides Another Option For Patients - Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (new) News Story - WCVB Boston

By Heather Maloney
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center staff

People struggling with extreme weight loss have a new surgical option available to them: the gastric sleeve procedure, which promises a shorter recovery period and less risk of serious post-surgery complications. Surgeons at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center’s Bariatric Surgery program have been performing this laparoscopic operation for about a year.

“The gastric sleeve was originally designed to be the first part of a two-part operation,” says Dr. Dan Jones, Chief of Minimally Invasive Surgery and Director of the Bariatric Program at BIDMC. “But patients found that they were losing 100 pounds after having it and not coming back for the second phase of the operation. Now, at BIDMC, we do it as a stand-alone procedure.”

47-year-old Mehrdad Niknezhad weighed 307 pounds when he had the gastric sleeve operation on December 14th. Now, just over a month later, he has already lost 30 pounds and feels great.

“I am very pleased with the results, and I really haven’t had any problems at all,” he says. “My wife had gastric bypass surgery a year ago, and she had problems with vomiting, etc., for about three months after surgery. I haven’t had any of that.”

During the operation, the surgeon removes anywhere from 60% to 80% of the stomach, creating a small, sleeve-shaped pouch. The new pouch can hold only a small amount of food, basically forcing the patient to eat less. The whole procedure is performed laparoscopically.

Unlike some of the other weight-loss procedures, the gastric sleeve does not involve any bypass of the intestinal tract, and the outlet vale and the nerves to the stomach remain intact. Therefore, patients are at less risk for anemia, osteoporosis and vitamin deficiency.

Dr. Jones also points out that, because a large part of the stomach is removed, many of the signals to the brain that trigger hunger are eliminated as well. As a result, the hunger response is diminished, which may be helpful for patients who have trouble getting their eating under control.

The gastric sleeve procedure is not yet covered by most insurance companies (currently, United Health is the only company in Massachusetts that covers it). The cost of the operation is approximately $30,000.

Dr. Jones says that the gastric sleeve may be a good option for patients who are considered “high risk”, or have other health issues that may prevent them from having gastric bypass surgery.

“I did this procedure on a patient who had several health issues. He couldn’t roll over in bed, he needed his knees and hips replaced, he had a hernia eroding through his skin, and he was hospitalized several times for congestive heart failure,” Dr. Jones says. “After having the sleeve procedure, he lost 185 pounds and is now able to get around pretty freely in a wheelchair. And now he’s healthy enough for doctors to operate on his hips and knees.”

The average recovery time is about four days in the hospital, sometimes less. But Dr. Jones points out that it’s still a serious operation that requires careful consideration and a willingness to make some major lifestyle changes.

“Many times, patients think that because a procedure is done laparoscopically, it’s a minor operation,” he says. “But that is just not the case.”

The biggest risk with the gastric sleeve is developing a leak in the new smaller stomach, though it’s a very small risk (less than 5%). But if there is a leak, the patient will need to return to the hospital so it can be adequately drained.

Mr. Niknezhad is thrilled with the results of his surgery, and says he would recommend the procedure to anyone thinking about weight-loss surgery.

“I considered other procedures, but gastric bypass was too radical and I saw the problems my wife had. And I just didn’t think the band would get the job done. I just felt like the sleeve was the right way to go.”

Change your tactics for weight loss

BY SUZANNE HAVALA HOBBS - CORRESPONDENT

As we launch into the New Year, it's a good time to come up with fresh tactics for our weight loss efforts.

It doesn't take much, but a new approach may inspire you to get started and keep you motivated until your success can help sustain the momentum.

Before you begin, though, lay the right foundation with clear, realistic goals.

Krogers

A weight loss of up to one or two pounds per week is reasonable for most of us.

Faster losses often represent fluid loss and may be unhealthy - and impossible - to sustain over time.

Focus on the process of weight loss, too, and not only on pounds lost. For example, think foremost about the actual changes you want to make in your diet and exercise habits.

Be sure that the goals are compatible with your lifestyle. If your schedule or budget doesn't permit you to join a gym, for instance, plan on walking for exercise instead.

Your goals should be easily - and objectively - measurable. Some examples:

Eating habits. "My goal is to eat at least one piece of fresh fruit each day. I will limit dessert to one serving per week." Another example: "I will not eat at my desk nor in front of the TV more than once a month."

Weight loss. "My goal is to lose one-quarter pound per week, or one pound per month, until I have lost 10 pounds this year."

Exercise. "My goal is to walk briskly for 45 minutes at least five out of seven days per week."

Now you're ready to jump-start your routine with some new tactics. Here are a few ideas:

Fast for one day each week. My colleague Jim, a former Marine, has kept his weight in check for years using this approach.

Let's say that Tuesday is your fasting day. From the time you go to bed Monday night until the time you wake up Wednesday morning, eat or drink only calorie-free foods such as coffee, tea, or diet soda.

The rationale: Rather than trying to cut back a little each day, save a whole day's worth of calories all at once. If your usual daily calorie intake is 2,100 calories, for example, you can fast for one day and cut as many calories as you would by trimming 300 calories a day for a week.

If you are diabetic or have other health problems, check with your health care provider before trying this.

Have fun while you exercise. We got a Wii Fit for Christmas, and the whole family has been stretching and working up a sweat while practicing yoga and jogging in the bonus room on these cold days.

Send yourself on a culinary vacation. This is the time of year that I start making more salads - beans with crushed pineapple and cayenne pepper, papaya with fresh lime juice, fruit salad with shredded coconut.

Low-calorie salads and sides that make me think of palm trees and sunshine when it's cold and dark outside are a nice diversion and a healthy substitute for leftover cookies and candy canes.

Shake up your weight loss routine with some smart, bold new approaches this year.
